Postdoctoral Fellow: Size-Selected Electrocatalysis and SECCM
A postdoctoral position is available immediately working with Profs.
Scott Anderson and Henry White in the Chemistry Department of the University of Utah in Salt Lake City (www.chem.utah.edu). The work will combine preparation and characterization of model electrodes decorated with atomically size-selected clusters, electrocatalysis studies using a unique in situ electrochemical system, and studies using scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM). We have observed in previous in situ experiments that there are large cluster size-effects on both activity and product branching, that can be correlated with cluster spectroscopic properties to reveal unique mechanistic insights. [1] SECCM is a technique for measuring electrochemistry with spatial resolution in the few hundred nanometer range, [2] and by combining the techniques, it should be possible to probe single cluster chemistry and the effects of electrode support-cluster interactions on catalysis. All the instrumentation for the experiments is operational.
Via collaboration, the project also has the support of detailed theory. The work will be fundamental, focusing on issues such as the effects on electrocatalytic activity of cluster size, inter-cluster proximity, and metal-support interactions.
This project provides opportunities to learn novel electrochemical and surface/cluster science techniques, and thus the ideal candidate will have experience in one or more of these areas, and also needs to be comfortable working with complex instrumentation.
The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility for renewal upon mutual agreement. The salary will be competitive with excellent health benefits. Salt Lake City, located along the Wasatch mountains, is a great place to work and live, with relatively inexpensive housing and many recreational/entertainment opportunities.
Inquiries can be made to either anderson@chem.utah.edu or white@chem.utah.edu. Applicants should send CVs and names of three people who have agreed to provide references, to anderson@chem.utah.edu.
The University of Utah is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity employer and is committed to diversity in its workforce.
